Copper and Copper Alloy Grades
Pure copper lacks the mechanical strength required for primary ship structures, so marine-grade copper alloys (such as cupro-nickels and brasses) are used for fluid transport, cooling systems, and hardware.
C70600 (90/10 Cupro-Nickel): Contains 90% copper and 10% nickel;
highly resistant to seawater corrosion and biofouling, making it ideal for
seawater piping and condenser tubes.
C71500 (70/30 Cupro-Nickel): Contains 70% copper and 30% nickel;
offers exceptional long-term durability and higher pressure/velocity
tolerance in aggressive marine environments.
C11000 (ETP Copper): Electrolytic tough pitch copper with high electrical
conductivity, heavily used for marine electrical wiring and power
distribution.
C12200 (DHP Copper): Phosphorus-deoxidised copper with high thermal
conductivity and superior weldability, commonly used in marine heat
exchangers and HVAC tubing.
Brass/Bronze Alloys (e.g., C36000, Gunmetal/Cast Bronze): Utilised for
marine hardware, propellers, valves, and hull fittings due to mechanical
strength and wear resistance.

Key Technical Properties:
Strength & Elasticity: High Tensile Strength (410−550 MPa) with a modulus of elasticity at roughly 200 GPa.
Ductility: Allows for deformation without failure, critical for resisting seismic loads.
Weldability & Fabrication: Easily welded and cut on-site, allowing for fast, modular assembly.
Fire & Corrosion Resistance: While not combustible, structural steel loses strength at temperatures above 500°C and requires anti-corrosion coating.
Fabrication and Connection:
Structural steel components are manufactured (rolled or welded) and then fabricated (cut, drilled, and welded) to exact specifications.
Connections: These are typically achieved through welding, bolting, or riveting to ensure high load-bearing capacity.
